Recently we went for a short trip to Aglona and spent all evening walking around. At first we enjoyed a peaceful Velnezers or Certoks (Devil's Lake), then walked around the Basilica of the Assumption of Aglona and at the end visited Christ the King's Mount.
Lake Velnezers or Certoks (in English - Devil's Lake) is popular sightseeing place near Aglona. There are several legends about this small lake, is one of the most mysterious places in Latvia.
Birds and wild animals avoid this Devil's lake and according to people say there are plenty of snakes in the lake, and the fish is rarely caught, except fat perches.
The depth of Certoks reaches 17 meters and it has unbelievably translucent water, the transparency of its water in some areas is about 12 meters.
Basilica of the Assumption in Aglona is one of the most important Catholic spiritual centers in Latvia.
The basilica is built in the 1780 in Italian Baroque style. Its spire height is 60 m.
