DIY love jar and card for Valentine's Day | J.M.

Hello and welcome to another DIY project (actually two DIY projects in one post)!
In this blog post, I am sharing two cute Valentine's day DIYs: one is a gift and second - card.

First DIY is a Love Jar!

For this DIY will be needed:
  • glass jar (I reused jar of jam)
  • construction paper (in one or several colors)
  • small ribbon
  • washi tape
  • white glue
  • pencil
  • scissors

On the red paper, trace around the lid.

Then cut it out with indent from the marked line (about the size of the width of the lid's side).

Make small cuts all the way around from the outer edge to the traced circle.

Cover the whole paper circle with some white glue. Using a small paintbrush, spread the glue evenly.

Then place the lid into the traced circle.

Glue the outer edge pieces to the side of the lid, overlapping the pieces.

As my lid had an uneven surface, I had to gently push out air bubbles.

Next, use shimmer washi tape to decorate the side of the lid or if you don't have one cut stripe of construction paper and glue it on.

Now we need to cut out two color hearts which will be used as hanging tags.

Fold in half a small square piece of paper and cut half of the heart and then unfold it.

Repeat the same thing for the second heart, but making this one slightly smaller.

If you don't like the folding line showing up, use a stencil or cut out the hearts freehand.

Place hearts one on top of the other and punch the hole where you think would look best.

Pull the ribbon through the holes.

Measure the length of the ribbon. I measured the length of the ribbon with hearts on because this way I could see how tight or lose the ribbon should be.

Cut it off and tie the ribbon around the jar.

Now let's prepare the filling!

Take a square or circle of the paper.

Fold it in half, then fold it in half again and one more time fold it in half. So three times fold it in half.

Holding to the inner corner, cut something like a half circle around the edge and unfold it.

It should look like a flower.

Now push to the middle opposite sides.

And flatten back and front of the fold like shown in the picture below.

It should be a folded heart now.

I made my hearts in different sizes and three colors. This way I think it looks way more interesting.

Now it is time to personalize the gift.

On the heart tags, I wrote the beginning of the sentence "I love you..." and then inside of each heart different ending of the sentence. But of course you can do it differently, maybe write some sweet random things or memories or anything else.

Place the folded hearts with your text inside the jar.

Second DIY is a pop-up card.

For this DIY will be needed:
  • construction paper (red or pink)
  • white paper (size: A5 or half of A4)
  • card stock (with pretty print or plain color)
  • glue stick
  • ruler
  • pencil, eraser
  • scissors
  • paper knife

First of all, on the red paper draw a heart using a stencil for it to be even and symmetrical. You can find the one you like on the Internet or download this one I used. But as you may notice I cut it out more rounded.

And then cut it out.

On a plain white paper lightly draw a middle line using a pencil. It will be a guideline and later fold line.

Cover whole heart with glue and stick the heart to the paper according to the guideline.

I have folded my stencil, to see where should go folding line on my heart. That helped me to figure out the placement of the heart.

On the heart very lightly, using pencil, I make tiny marks.
At first, I mark where will be the middle line and then go to both sides of it so it could be more symmetrical. Using ruler you can do precise markings.

On cutting board or cutting mat, using a paper knife, cut lines inside the heart. Using ruler's straight corner make straight, perpendicular lines to the edge of the card.

Press the ruler down very well so it wouldn't move while cutting the paper which also may not be easy if using thicker kind paper.

Erase all markings made before.

Fold the paper in half and bend only sides.

Now comes a bit tricky part.

Carefully pull up and bend at the sides every other piece inside the heart.

When done with pulling up the pieces, close the card, make sure every piece is bending nicely, adjust if needed and push down all the bends. It may be easier to do it one by one then all at the same time.

May happen that in some places from all the cutting and bending, the paper will pop off, then just glue it back.

When that all done, take pretty paper for cards cover. It can be the same size or a little bit bigger.

Fold it in half.

Place the card inside and glue it to the cover. For me, it was easier to glue one side at the time.

And the card is done!

Inside the card is this 3D heart and plenty of space to write all your feelings for your loved one!

See how to do both these DIYs in action:

Happy Valentine's Day!
